These brownies get an upgrade thanks to the addition of applesauce, which brings natural moisture and a fudgy texture. The simple twist that makes your favorite treat feel a little more nourishing.
Ingredients9 servings
- 7 oz dark chocolate (70%)
- 3 eggs
- ⅔ cup unsweetened applesauce
- ½ cup (2 oz) chopped walnuts + 9 walnut halves for topping (or hazelnuts/pecans)
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup loosely packed coconut sugar or brown sugar
- Neutral oil for the pan
Directions

1
Melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl: heat for 1 minute, stir, then heat again for 30 seconds. If the chocolate isn’t fully melted, repeat as needed.

2
In a mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar until the mixture thickens and doubles in volume.

3
Add the applesauce and melted chocolate to the egg–sugar mixture and mix again.

4
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Add the flour and chopped walnuts and mix until the flour is just incorporated.

5
Pour the brownie batter into a square baking pan lightly greased or lined with parchment paper. Top with walnut halves, then bake for about 25 minutes. Enjoy warm for extra fudginess.
Note: You can also melt the chocolate using a double boiler if preferred.
