Burt’s Bee’s is really a poor chapstick. I used it for YEARS/possibly decades and wondered why I needed tubes in my car, multiple places in my home as I literally was applying it 10-12 times a day. My Dermatologist shared it’s NOT GOOD, especially w/ the menthol/mint component, and they hear my complaint frequently from other patients. She urged me to use ONLY Vaseline ‘origional’ ONLY (they have it in tubes or ointment.) VOILA’! What a difference! It took a week or two for me to ‘withdrawal’ from the menthol fresh feel of Burt’s Bee’s, but NO more chapped lips. Yet Vaseline isn’t on your list? Can you share why? Thanks for all this work! I think Vaseline and Aquaphor are the same if not very similar? Maybe?
Vaseline is made from Petroleum Jelly and other ingredients. Aquaphor is mineral oil which is a distillate of petroleum and other ingredients.
In general, Vasoline contains petroleum jelly, not really something you want on your lips or to be bringing more of into the world. But, scan it and see what Yuka says!
Not a fan of petroleum derived products yet dermatologist have no problem recommending Vaseline, Aquaphor and CeraVe products. I used these products for years and they worked fine. Personally I am trying to get away from as much toxic and hormone disruptive products (they are everywhere it’s scary) so I take that extra step to really understand the ingredients that make up a product. I cross reference using the EWG cite but a long ingredient list is always a red flag for me.

Wow I use lip balm every single day a few times a day. But I always thought the
Burt’s Bees would be on your list. but when I scan it’s only 65 /100 . So thanks ill definitely will be looking forward to purchasing one of the list .
I appreciate Yuma’s attention to what we put on and in our bodies. But these products are encased in plastic. Nanoplastics in our bodies is a serious problem. I prioritize using zero or low waste packaging. The environment is also important for our health.

Honest brand by Attitude has lip balms with tint! Their products meet EWG standards (higher standard than Yuka has).

Burt’s Bees mineral sunscreen with SPF 30 gets 93/100.
I love Badger lip balms (not the cocoa ones), olive oil is their first ingredient and they’re all natural.
Can I also suggest phytoplex lip balm from medline remedy. It also gets 100/100 on the app. It’s given out at several hospitals and is very good for chapped and dry lips
Do you have a recommendation that includes sunscreen? It’s a MUST for me when outdoors.
The Yuka app works so well, it’s so fast.
I have returned items after learning they were subpar thanks to the app.
And despite Trader Joe’s healthy messaging, I’ve also learned that most of their personal care products are rated ‘Poor’ or ‘Bad’.

These lip balms seem very good for those who have chapped lips. I DO NOT, I am looking to protect my lips from the sun. Exposure to the sun irritates my lips and causes other issues. I need a sun block lip balm, who does not and none of these have any SPF protection.

Good morning, in my opinion Carmex should’ve came in first! I’ve been using it for over twenty years(and have grown to use it’s effectiveness on other parts of the body!).
It is based on ingredients. Scan your Carmex and see what the app says.
I have been using a brand prior to finding Yuka called Kobee’s but it does not have a bar code to scan! Any thought or information on that particular product?

I started with EOS & my loved it, but finally it bothered me. my dermatologist said there was one thing in there that could actually bother some people so I went back to Burt’s bees, which I had been using previously,and it is good for me.

I disagree with at least 2 of these ratings. Aquaphor is petroleum based, Carmex is also no good,
Badger Vanilla Bean Cocoa Butter lip Balm made by W.S. Badger Company, Inc. is the best that I have ever tried! Please check it out.
Could you explain “ controversial UV filters”? I always choose a lip balm in winter & summer with SPF because of skiing & kayaking (reflections off snow & water). Is UV FILTER different than SPF?

I didn’t see the Beekman 1802 lip balm on the list. Have you tried it by chance? It’s great! Real goat milk is used and it’s clean! They also have one with spf.
I was also wondering why Beekman was listed. Love it!
Good to know. I bought Tatcha lip mask – total waste of money. It’s like a glossy Vaseline- does nothing. I also tried jack black which is just like a denser Vaseline.

Not all items of the same brand are good, I went through many products shopping and Aquaphor rated excellent.

Can you take packaging and environmental impact into your rating? So many of these tubes will not break down.
EcoLips is a great option I found for the sustainability of their tubes, and the ingredients also seem very good.

Kind of surprised by the rating on some of these, particularly Aquaphor that is derived from petroleum.
aquaphor lip repair, both in tube and stick form, don’t contain petrolatum, but this is an understandable mixup because their other ointments with very similar packaging do have it.

I’ve tried a few of these, they work & feel great. However, not sure about this EOS lip balm. I tried the other lip balm products a while ago & got irritated skin & lips. It took me a bit to figure out the Eos brand was causing it. I tried a couple of different kinds & it finally dawned on me. Hopefully they changed the formula/ingredients but I’m not trying it again.
My personal fav is All Good certified organic coconut lip balm. Thanks for the list of additional alternatives!
