As the days get longer, it’s time to think about sunscreen ☀️
But with endless options on the shelves, how do you know which ones are actually safe — for your kids and for you?
Many sunscreens contain ingredients linked to health concerns and environmental harm, particularly for aquatic life. That’s why taking a closer look at what’s inside matters.
To make things easier, we’ve rounded up 10 of the best-rated SPF 50 sunscreens on Yuka.
Protect your skin, without compromising your health or the ocean 🌊

I love yuka
Love YUKA
I recently bought the Nivea recommended by YUKA but would love to know which tinted sunscreens are best
I love yuka
There is no mention about the UVA/B star ratings. I am primarily focused on this having had melanoma and always look for at least 4* and generally 5*. The difference between SPF 30 and 50 is often only 1.5%
Thank you
I find your updates very interesting and helpful, however why do you not say which products are cruelty free or have the jumping bunnie mark. It would save time having to cross reference.
Thanks Julie, much appreciate this info, will definitely be buying the Nivea baby sunscreen.
Please do more of these types of lists!
Also, how do the cheaper, supermarket owned brands of SPF compare?
And is there any that doesn’t make me sweat like a pig 😂
thank you for providing this list. Ive been wondering which to choose and this is just what I need. I’ll go for the Garnier – but my local chemist has not yet got any although it is on order.
I recently used Yuka to find a natural sunscreen and Yuka told me that Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 50+ is 100/100 – Excellent.
But why is that not listed in your Top 10?
Are there any sun screen aerosols which are over 50/100 on Yuka?
I find the aerosols so convenient but the Soltan aerosol I currently use is below 50/100 on Yuka. I would love to swap to a higher-rated aerosol but cannot find one, only the conventional creams. Thanks!
Hi Julie
It was good to see all the sun lotions that are high standard. I’m just wondering why bioearth 50 plus wasn’t on the list, which came up as 83 and excellent
Many thanks
Sue
It would be good to be able to read more about the Sun creams with opening an app . Not enough info given sadly .
Thank you so much for the information 👍💕
I always use Green people as no nasties in their products.
Thank you for this information.I normally buy Garnier anyway. As far as I know they do not test on animals. That is a winner to me,but will check out the other makes 😀
Very useful. Thank you
Very useful information and I will use this as my guide to buy. Thank you!
What about Altruist devised by a doctor to make good quality screening at affordable price available from Amazon etc.
I have two different Altruist suncreams. Moisturising Fluid SPF 50 scores 80/100 but the Sunscreen SPF 50 scores 0/100! Cannot understand why there is so much difference. They were created by a dermatologist so surely they can’t be that bad?
I love our altruist suncream… it’s the only one I’ve found that is none sweaty and doesn’t irritate my husbands eczema skin. Bit bothered by having just scanned it into the app and seen it’s scored zero. Would like to understand why.
Where are these available from please – online or in store? Brands unfamiliar to me in uk.
Is P20 sunscreen ok?
I would also love to see a TOP 10 of SPF 30 sunscreen.
Hello Yuka and all 😎
Very surprised not to see MooGoo’s natural sunscreen in there? Is there any reason?
Thank you
Thank you so much for your help
I would like to know your rating for tinted sun screens, factor 50. There are a few in Boots but none have a good score so I don’t know if there’s a safe one I could use? Thank you for all the products you rate. It’s quite scary to think how many chemicals we have put on our skin before your App. informed us.
👍
Thanks for the heads up very interesting
Very helpful as never quite sure which is the better dream to use.
Granolas and muesli?
Thanks 😊
These are all factor 50,can you recommend any factor 30 that doesn’t contain oil or anything that blocks sweart glands as I suffer from really bad prickly heat. I have sorced some on the Internet but I can’t check bar codes on there. Thank you in advance for your help
Great overview, much needed and for me right in time for summer holidays.
Thank you!
Thank you for sof information just what I needed to decide which is suitable for me
This is very useful, thank you. It would be very helpful to say if these are suitable for thyroid suffers as I have heard that some sun creams can be harmful to thyroid sufferers. Thank you
It would be great if you could include whether products are tested on animals in your ratings. Pretty sure the first product isn’t. I think Garnier do lots of testing on animals. So unnecessary these days!
Thank you for this but can you do review products that do lower SPFs – not everybody wants total sunblock, we need some Vit D. Also some of these products are not available in UK.
I’ve been using Green People products, they do a Factor 30 for body and Factor 15 for the face. When scanned with your app they have good scores.
I use Tropics suncare range and it feels and smells great. My skin feels moisturised and soft whilst getting the best protection and aftercare.
I’d like to give a shout out to SVR, Eau Solaire Sun Secure SPF 30, which you rate at ‘100/100 Excellent’. It’s non greasy and fragrance free. Perfection!
Ironically I wish this was available a few weeks ago. However, we did scan any new Sun ☀️ screen especially for the grandchildren.
Like most of the comments below a scan practically everything before I put it in the trolley or purchase thank you .
Thank you so much.
I wish your best rated sunscreens would have been published sooner.
Did not get any of those.
Very informative thank you
Thank you very much very grateful,
I don’t buy anything before scan with Yuca first.
Why all 50 spf protection? Highest I use is 20 otherwise 10, as you need sun to give you vitamin D…this is why people are lacking vitamin D
That’s exactly what I was thinking!
I’ve been using ‘Olay’ moisturiser with spf 15.
I now have pigmentation on my face.
So guess we need to adjust spf levels according to the temperatures ??
Should not be exposing ourselves to the sun for more than 20 mins or so we are able to get the vit D, after which the sun cream can be applied from what I understand.
Please correct me if wrong.
Very useful information.
Many thanks
THANKYOU – so useful to have this info as my grown-up children are now sun-screen aware too as they slather it on their children to protect them and need the peace of mind that it is safe to use. A price-range for each one would have been helpful – the ones my ‘children’ have bought seem alarmingly expensive.
Thank you for this – very grateful
Thank you for the Info
Thank you!
I bought Apivita last year in Greece. I was so pleased to see you rated it as 93/100
It’s a lovely sunscreen
Thanks for this. Information is always useful when trying out new products.
Thank you this very useful. I’m a little confused though as to why the Tropic Skincare body spf creams aren’t mentioned and yet they score higher than some others on here that are mentioned.
You really can’t run an evidence based comparison without including Altruist.
What ingredients linked to health concerns and environmental harm so we can check those sunscreens not listed please? I just bought a load of SCINIC’s ‘Enjoy Super Mild Sun Essence’ which is from South Korea and has the following major ingredients.
Purified Water, Dibutyl Adipate, Propanediol, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Polysilicone-15, Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, Ethylhexyltriazone, Niacinamide, Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Vanilla Tahitensis Fruit Extract, Bambusa Vulgaris Water, Centella Asiatica Extract, Caprylyl Methicone, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Silica, Poly C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methyl Glucose Distearate, Sodium Acrylate Crosspolymer- 2, Decyl Glucoside, Acrylate/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Tromethamine, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Adenosine, Panthenol, Dipropylene Glycol, Pentylene Glycol, Behenyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum
I found this list online I’m not sure how accurate it is.

I bought the Alturist sun screen 30 which I was told was good as dermatologist recommend and it came out Bad 0/100
It’s bad only because it’s SPF30. In all other aspects it’s worth 100/100. SPF50 is the minimum you should use.
oh my gosh, the more ingredients technically means worse, sooo
Thanks, very helpful information!!!
For what i know is not recommended to use sunscreen 50 but less than 50
This is so helpful.. Thank you.
It would be sensible if the link ‘Open in the App’ took you to the product in the app, wouldn’t it? This just takes you to the App Store. 5/100
Green People’s lovely organic reef- and skin-safe sunscreens should absolutely be on this list! They’ve got zero nasties and go on so well too. Not sure Garnier’s is quite as clean!
Thanks! Very useful for me and my grandchildren!
thanks for this. very useful to know
A good list – but please check out (and possibly include) Altruist, SPF50, non-scented, formulated by consultant dermatologists, and very competitively priced.
Very helpful…thankyou, especially as I have sun damage on my face
Thank you for helping me with my sun cream
Perfect Great to see sun creams that are good for you. Can we do some rating on the big high street sun creams
Shame most of these aren’t vegan. No point protecting the oceans whilst harming other animals/life. It seems a needless trade off.
The Tropic Skincare ones are vegan and reef safe. The face SPF is mentioned but the body ones not and yet they score higher than some of those mentioned, which I find odd.
Thank you for this. The ones I use are not listed. Any prices please.
Thank you that’s great . A price next to the item would have been helpful.
Thank you for this but I find the ratings on cosmetic products confusing. For example there’s a children’s Nivea product here with a good rating but all other Nivea sun screens seem to have bad/poor ratings on Yuka. How can this be?
Very useful information. Thank you very much. Wonder if there’s similar for SPF tinted moisturiser?
Both Tropic and Moogoo do tinted spf that is rated excellent on here 😊
Green People’s is amazing
ok – but it’s really disappointing you didn’t review the supermarket own brands (Aldi/Lidl/Tesco etc)
Feels a bit out of touch with the general consumer to just focus on this premium grouping
You are right and I am sure they are as good as the expensive brands.
Thank you for this list. After chemo, I need to ensure I use sunscreen of spf 50. I see I have some great choices!
Thank you for this great resource
Would like to know if there is any 30 spf protection that is good too
Thank you so much for this. Have you done any research on moisturisers containing a high spf? I’d be very interested in getting some ideas on this.
Which suncreams do not leave a yellow stain on clothing which ruins white clothing especially but also gives a good protection
Interesting that La Roche Posay comes out 76/100. I bought their Invisible spray a couple of years ago and just put it into Yuka and it comes out 5/100. Have they really changed its composition that much?
Really grateful for this as there is so many on the market, I never know which one to get!
Thank you.
A top ten of big retailers own suncream would be useful as this is where we mostly shop.
I agree as they always have the best deals, want to know about Nivea and Piz Buin
Thank you, great information at the right time
Cien from Aldi is Which top sunscreen.
Are the ingredients risk free do you know? Thanks
You mean Lidl , Aldi do their own , and all come up BAD on Yuka 😩
Thank you very helpful, I have holidays coming up.
Thank you for this. I also spend so much time now with my Yuka app. I really struggled to find sunscreen with a good rating prior to my holiday. The supermarkets only stock a few limited brands. This is very helpful. Also great that you have a cruelty free option. Love this app.
Do you have any recommended at SpF 30?
Tropic Skincare do both SPF 30 and 50 and come up as excellent in the app. Vegan and reef safe.
Nice Sun Sensitive immediate protect SPF 50+ Sun Allergy Protection has a score of 76/100 on Yuka so should be in top 10 too instead of – Garnier Hydra 24h Protect SPF 50. Thank you
Is it possible to rate sunscreens on environmental friendliness – plastic use and non-polluting to aquatic and ocean life?
Not all of these are easily available. I checked Nivea Sun 50+ sensitive immediate protect on Yuka and it came up excellent so use that.
I really appreciate your support and help us I have allergy from the sun and last year I did try different suncream and I was getting a allergic reaction. Thank you 😊
Hi, you probably need a 100% mineral sun cream if you have sensitive skin.
Tropic Skincare do one in factor 30 and 50.
Thank you for the information, What a brilliant app.
What about: BIODERMA
Photoderm Pediatrics Spray SPF50+
Bioderma
90/100
Excellent
Did you look at Ultrasun?
I enjoy your app immensely thanks. For many years I have been using Ultrasun products due to good presentation and that one needs only one application a day. I was then horrified to see your rating of 0. I will need to check out the products you have recommended which will not be easy as I like to know more information before buying.
Find this ap really good and will definitely be looking for the right sun cream this year as last year I came up in heat rash and it was horrible had it a few time before in the past which ruins your holiday so thanks will check these out
Thanks, really helpful
Hi Julie,
Thanks for this article, firstly.
Secondly, you don’t list any of the ingredients for each of these products. Why is this?
Thus, how do we independently assess for ourselves which of these products passes our own criteria for usage?
Thanks!
Nothing in Boots . Can’t find in any shop .
Wow so many but it always the 1st one is the best to use but like me I’m elergic to lanolin so I can’t used mostly none of them
Decathlon sun screen 30 protection comes up 100/100 on the app and is very affordable. I think it was about £8 per bottle
We use this one too as other high rated ones I looked at were sooo expensive!
I have been using Altruist suncream for years – recommended by a dermatologist! It scores 0/100 – I was horrified. Now changed to Green People which scores 93/100 on yr app so please include this product in your list – would highly recommend it for very sensitive skin, it’s paraben/SLS/scent free and is also organic. 20%off your first order.
I was using Altruist as well as it was supposedly created by one of our local doctors and a team around Canterbury, but also was horrified by it’s score on Yuka
Makes you wonder if Yuka scores are always right !!
I love using this app, am forever telling people about too, I just bought sunscreen thankfully just seen it in the list!
Did you test Altruist, which was developed by a dery?
Please don’t forget that the best sunscreens are 5* UVA rated (to prevent long term skin damage and ageing) some big brands are only 3* which isn’t great
Sickening that none of your lists of recommendations take account of animal testing/cruelty free credentials…makes them useless and disingenuous as far as I’m concerned.
Surely you can check that out yourself. Yuka can’t check everything.
It takes me longer to do my shopping, because I am always checking the app – but it’s great to check things out at the shop
Thank you.
This App is totally amazing. I scan everything since having breast cancer and it is incredible how many things that we put on our bodies have so many nasty and worrying chemicals in them 😡
Please keep up the good work!
Thanks for the information. I’m going to Greece in August and was looking for a good sunscreen to use
Well looking at this list I use Greenpeople and thought this would’ve been at the top of your list. I purchased the factor 30 which is especially good for prickly heat skin as I’m fair skinned and suffer . Totally organic , vegan ,no nasties in this brand. I got 20% off on my first order. Really worth adding this to your list. The aftersun is great too, check them out.
Same here. The Green People scent free sun cream and the spf 30 mineral sun cream both get rated 93/100 on the yuka app so I’m wondering why it’s not made the top 10.
Replying to my own comment as I’m unsure if I can edit. Just realised the top 10 list here is made up of spf 50’s therefore the two Green People spf 30’s wouldn’t be included however Green People do a children’s spf 50 sun cream so I’d be interested to know why it didn’t make the top 10.
I am interested in children’s sun cream my grandson comes up in a rash after using it
Is the Anthelios ultra light tinted La Roche Possy also included ?
Thank you so much
Please any safe sunscreen good kids
Thank you
Hi, Tropic Skincare do a sun stick SPF50+ safe from 3 months and vegan, cruelty free and comes up as excellent on the app. Also the 100% mineral range is great for kids, again t
Rated as as excellent and can be used from age 3 years.
Hi, thanks for the heads up on Sun protection, very well received. I can’t believe how much it costs these days!
Can you recommend any 30spf
Is decathlon still good?
This is so helpful and I really needed this information. Thank you so much xx
Any with an SPF of less than 50?
Hi,
How come now those two Sunscreens Roche Posay & Avene are excellent products? I used to buy those two products and switch to Caudalie. I looked at my history in your application when did I scan them the first time. It was three years ago and again re-scanned them two years ago and come back with the same mention Poor or Bad. So, my question is, what exactly happened for Yuka to have a change of heart from Bad & Poor to Excellent?
Good question.
I was thinking the exact same thing ! Can you tell us what has changed?
I have same issue with Ambre Solaire Garnier hydra 24 protect UVA 30. Same bottle etc as the 50 here but comes up zero !!!
What happened to the Decathlon sunscreen which rates 100 ?
Thank you for this list. To make it even better, some idea of relative cost would be useful.
Very useful. I am already using the heartleaf sunscreen by Anua. Excellent
This is not very good list considering it’s from June last year.
Have the creams been tested for effectiveness or are you looking only at ingredients? How would we know which ones work well from this list?
I’ve used the Caudalie the last 2 years, face & both 30 & 50 body & really like it.
Very useful thank you.👍
I haven’t heard of any except Nivea which isn’t cruelty free ! Why are they all 50 i would like a lower factor these are all for kids + brands from where ? Thanks for the info tho !
Your intro to sunscreens says … I hope this helps you choose the best granola. That aside, I love my Yuka guise.
Love it thanks!!!
Do you know if the centella one works as well ?
Great work thank you
Thanks for this Julie. However the only suncream I recognise is Nivea kids sun cream. The rest are so 0bscure. I have never seen them anywhere. Stores we can buy them?? Thanks and thanks for your wonderful organisation. I use my app all the time
Hi June, i think you will find that Boots and most chemist will sell most of the products 😊
That’s great information, thanks for sharing 💜. Do you have any reviews on sunscreens with less than SPF50?
We do need sunshine and blocking it completely is not beneficial. A lower SPF is perfectly fine if you’re using common sense and try to avoid midday the sun exposure. Thanks a lot!
I use the Caudalie both 50 & 30 & really like it. I get it online & find the cheapest price. I also use Natural Elements Sun oil, all natural, I use it first for a short while before I start to go pink I apply sun cream over the top. Enables me to get vitamin D & gives a good tan. Their website has some great info regarding sun exposure.
Surprised not to see Green People on the list! They’ve come out top on most other lists. Non staining, vegan, organic, ocean safe, fragrance free etc. Mayhe because there’s is just factor 30?
I wondered the same. Green People do now have a children’s spf 50 so I’d be interested to know why it didn’t make the top 10.
Are these mineral sunscreens? As chemical ones are very bad for us/Protection from Sun. Most don’t seem to mention mineral base or Zinc, which is important for sun protection.
Green people do a mineral one
Green people do a mineral one
I use La Rosée
Made in France and rated 100/100 by yourselves. Worth a look.
Sunscreen is completely unnecessary, especially given that it blocks essential UVB rays. The entire fear campaign over the sun causing cancer, is nothing but propaganda propped up by nefarious Government campaigns that have no substantial evidence to back it up. When did humanity go from worshipping the sun, to demonising it?
No one is forcing you to use it. Just don’t be surprised when you get skin cancer down the line
Grow up
Not true Daryl – do some more research.
Were any affordable (eg own brands) tested?
Define affordable?
Well at most supermarkets you can get 200ml for under £5
Can we have the best factor 30s too please Julie? This is really helpful
You don’t put Alteya sun screen in your top ten, despite it rating higher than most of these, they are organic and safe for marine life. I think you have a hidden agenda 🤔
Unfortunately I’m allergic to sunscreens (yes, even the hypoallergenic ones) and have to resort to mineral blocks like zinc oxide. Do you know what the highest rated sunblocks are?
Have a look & maybe contact Natural Elements. I use their Sun oil which is all natural, they recommend it on its own then shade but say it also protects your skin from sunscreen if you want to apply over the top which is what I do on holiday. They do samples & are very helpful. The owner is or was a skin scientist of some sort. I’ve used it for about 10 years
Do you rate it in relation to Endocrine Disruption Chemicals? Are your recommendations free from EDCs?
This is so helpful thanks! Does anyone know the best uva sunscreen of the above? Very keen to prevent skin aging
Absolutely love this app, re sun care CAUDALIE if my go to:)
Have you looked at any factor 30? How does the Korres range ( which I use in Greece ) rate?
Loving using your app.
Kind to the environment should also include not tested on animals. This should be a given now not just a nice to have!
Thank you for the sunscreen list very helpful and saves time.
This is great & I love your app, I Never shop without it…but total blocking is not good. I’m reading more & more saying we shouldn’t be using sunscreen but covering up & letting our bodies get used to exposure as so many people are vitamin d deficient & more skin cancers severe been using sunscreens 🙈
Ditto, I totally agree
Totally agree! We do need exposure to sun. Many people are deficient in calcium and other vitamins and minerals and sunshine is vital to our health and well-being.
Nonsense
We did that back in the 70s…. It wasn’t a great idea as is now being proved.
I love the sun but recognise the risks and need to protect our skin. None of these totally block sun but provide important protection.
This is great & online Tesco! Never shop without it…but total blocking is not good. IM reading more & more saying we shouldn’t be using sunscreen but covering up & letting our bodies get used to exposure as so many people are vitamin d deficient & more skin cancers severe been using sunscreens 🙈
It’s important to separate facts from myths. While vitamin D is essential, the idea that we should avoid sunscreen entirely to boost vitamin D levels is misleading.
Unprotected sun exposure is the primary cause of skin cancers, including melanoma, which can be deadly. Studies consistently show that sunscreen reduces the risk of skin cancer when used correctly. The idea that more people are getting skin cancer because of sunscreen isn’t supported by credible science — in fact, it’s more likely due to increased UV exposure and better detection.
As for vitamin D, you can safely maintain healthy levels through short periods of sun exposure (without burning), diet, or supplements — without risking skin damage.
So, it’s not about blocking all sun, but about protecting your skin while being sensible in the sun. Sunscreen, shade, and protective clothing are part of a smart sun strategy — not something to ditch entirely.
How does Altruist Sunscreen rate? I would have expected this brand to have featured in the top ten. Its reasonably priced and developed by a dermatologist.
Love the app use it all the time so informative
Love your app! It’s so useful and informative when I’m shopping.
Love this. People just don’t look at the ingredients in their skin care products.
I use the tropic sun day every day and love it.
SPF50 mean no tanning at all…are there some sunscreens with lower SPF which rate 100 ?…
Garnier invisible protect spf 30
Rated 83/100 Excellent
Best bang for your Buck I’d say
Hi, as I understand it you can divide sunscreens into ones that use mineral or chemical filters. Only sunscreens that employ mineral filters are truly person- and eco-friendly. Do the suscreens you recommend all use mineral filters?
Very helpful guide, thank you
Love this ! For UK based – Decathlon has their own brand 50 SPF 93/100 !
Thank you for this. That would be amazing if Yuka was also showing if the brand tests on animals (unfortunately loads of them still do)
I have used the Caudalie line of sunscreen since I saw it on your app a couple of years ago. I love it and use several of their products including the stick!
Really useful guide once again – thank you Yuka!
What about Korean suncream Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ 50ml
Amazing, thank you Julie. We are using the Mustela for our little one.
Isn’t there a good sunscreen for less than $4.50/oz.?
