There is no mention about the UVA/B star ratings. I am primarily focused on this having had melanoma and always look for at least 4* and generally 5*. The difference between SPF 30 and 50 is often only 1.5%

I recently used Yuka to find a natural sunscreen and Yuka told me that Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 50+ is 100/100 – Excellent.

But why is that not listed in your Top 10?

Are there any sun screen aerosols which are over 50/100 on Yuka?
I find the aerosols so convenient but the Soltan aerosol I currently use is below 50/100 on Yuka. I would love to swap to a higher-rated aerosol but cannot find one, only the conventional creams. Thanks!

I have two different Altruist suncreams. Moisturising Fluid SPF 50 scores 80/100 but the Sunscreen SPF 50 scores 0/100! Cannot understand why there is so much difference. They were created by a dermatologist so surely they can’t be that bad?

Thank you for this but can you do review products that do lower SPFs – not everybody wants total sunblock, we need some Vit D. Also some of these products are not available in UK.
I’ve been using Green People products, they do a Factor 30 for body and Factor 15 for the face. When scanned with your app they have good scores.

So guess we need to adjust spf levels according to the temperatures ??
Should not be exposing ourselves to the sun for more than 20 mins or so we are able to get the vit D, after which the sun cream can be applied from what I understand.

I found this list online I’m not sure how accurate it is.

      Ingredients to Avoid and Why:

      Oxybenzone:
A common chemical sunscreen ingredient that has been linked to hormone disruption and allergic reactions.

      Octinoxate:
Another chemical sunscreen ingredient that can cause skin irritation, allergies, and may also disrupt the endocrine system.

A chemical sunscreen ingredient that can also be a hormone disruptor.

      Octocrylene:
A chemical sunscreen ingredient that is suspected of having hormonal effects and is not considered ecologically safe.

      Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A Palmitate):
While vitamin A is beneficial, retinyl palmitate can break down into harmful compounds when exposed to sunlight, potentially contributing to skin cancer and accelerated aging.

      Parabens:
Synthetic preservatives that can be endocrine-disrupting and may cause skin irritation.

      Phthalates:
Chemicals that can disrupt the endocrine system and have been linked to various health problems.

This App is totally amazing. I scan everything since having breast cancer and it is incredible how many things that we put on our bodies have so many nasty and worrying chemicals in them 😡
Please keep up the good work!

Well looking at this list I use Greenpeople and thought this would’ve been at the top of your list. I purchased the factor 30 which is especially good for prickly heat skin as I’m fair skinned and suffer . Totally organic , vegan ,no nasties in this brand. I got 20% off on my first order. Really worth adding this to your list. The aftersun is great too, check them out.

Same here. The Green People scent free sun cream and the spf 30 mineral sun cream both get rated 93/100 on the yuka app so I’m wondering why it’s not made the top 10.

Replying to my own comment as I’m unsure if I can edit. Just realised the top 10 list here is made up of spf 50’s therefore the two Green People spf 30’s wouldn’t be included however Green People do a children’s spf 50 sun cream so I’d be interested to know why it didn’t make the top 10.

    Hi,
How come now those two Sunscreens Roche Posay & Avene are excellent products? I used to buy those two products and switch to Caudalie. I looked at my history in your application when did I scan them the first time. It was three years ago and again re-scanned them two years ago and come back with the same mention Poor or Bad. So, my question is, what exactly happened for Yuka to have a change of heart from Bad & Poor to Excellent?

That’s great information, thanks for sharing 💜. Do you have any reviews on sunscreens with less than SPF50?

We do need sunshine and blocking it completely is not beneficial. A lower SPF is perfectly fine if you’re using common sense and try to avoid midday the sun exposure. Thanks a lot!

I use the Caudalie both 50 & 30 & really like it. I get it online & find the cheapest price. I also use Natural Elements Sun oil, all natural, I use it first for a short while before I start to go pink I apply sun cream over the top. Enables me to get vitamin D & gives a good tan. Their website has some great info regarding sun exposure.

Are these mineral sunscreens? As chemical ones are very bad for us/Protection from Sun. Most don’t seem to mention mineral base or Zinc, which is important for sun protection.

Sunscreen is completely unnecessary, especially given that it blocks essential UVB rays. The entire fear campaign over the sun causing cancer, is nothing but propaganda propped up by nefarious Government campaigns that have no substantial evidence to back it up. When did humanity go from worshipping the sun, to demonising it?

Unfortunately I’m allergic to sunscreens (yes, even the hypoallergenic ones) and have to resort to mineral blocks like zinc oxide. Do you know what the highest rated sunblocks are?

Have a look & maybe contact Natural Elements. I use their Sun oil which is all natural, they recommend it on its own then shade but say it also protects your skin from sunscreen if you want to apply over the top which is what I do on holiday. They do samples & are very helpful. The owner is or was a skin scientist of some sort. I’ve used it for about 10 years

I’m reading more & more saying we shouldn’t be using sunscreen but covering up & letting our bodies get used to exposure as so many people are vitamin d deficient & more skin cancers severe been using sunscreens 🙈

It’s important to separate facts from myths. While vitamin D is essential, the idea that we should avoid sunscreen entirely to boost vitamin D levels is misleading.

Unprotected sun exposure is the primary cause of skin cancers, including melanoma, which can be deadly. Studies consistently show that sunscreen reduces the risk of skin cancer when used correctly. The idea that more people are getting skin cancer because of sunscreen isn’t supported by credible science — in fact, it’s more likely due to increased UV exposure and better detection.

As for vitamin D, you can safely maintain healthy levels through short periods of sun exposure (without burning), diet, or supplements — without risking skin damage.

So, it’s not about blocking all sun, but about protecting your skin while being sensible in the sun. Sunscreen, shade, and protective clothing are part of a smart sun strategy — not something to ditch entirely.
