I am just wondering if it’s ever been considered that perhaps we only want a 15 or 20 SPF, that we want to get some sun coloring on our skin. All of these are 50, are there any that you would recommend in the lower SPS?

It would be nice if you listed if any of these are reef safe. This is an important factor when choosing a sunscreen.

My THINKSPORT 50 SPF shows a photo in upper right corner that it is 🪸 REEF FRIENDLY. It is clear zinc, non-greasy and no fragrance that I notice. Yuka rated: Excellent 93/100

✔️ Reef friendly is also listed on the back along with ✔️mineral based ✔️vegan ✔️bpa free.

I’ve been a Coppertone gal since the 60s. Occasionally, I would buy a different brand for the smell. While in Florida, this winter, I scanned my yucca sunscreens only to find out that they were bad. I am now using the Thinkkids on the 65-year-old body. I so appreciate this app.

I have found that the lotion gets a poor rating while the stick gets excellent. You need to scan the barcode for each item, because it is not the same rating across an entire brand.

I can see why people lean toward the name brands in the stores that aren’t so good for you. These are quite pricey! As always, anything that is good for you is expensive.

    1) Badger is awful. It doesn’t not ‘reef’ protect and it is terrible to rub in, makes you skin chalky white !
    2) Sky & Sol is thinner, rubbed in fine, but again, didn’t ‘reef’ protect from sun. I applied a lot on my body, my arms burned terribly. So I stopped using it and only applied on my face before foundation… double protection. It worked fine mainly because I had a visor on and no sun on my face. Arms were a different story.

I would also love to see tinted sunscreens too… especially ones that have more color options. I’ve tried Daily Bawse but unfortunately their colors are super limited and I’m in between their choices which means I have to buy two and mix them which is expensive and a pain.

You can always tell by the end of the link – remove the link parameters at the end and just do a regular search on the product, that is an affiliate link.

Thanks for asking. There have been numerous instances where I have scanned sunscreen products with similar or the exact same ingredients such as non-nano zinc oxide that they have scored extremely low based on a study about some zebra fish poorly but then they rates these other brands highly. I asked Yuka about this inconsistency and why they are focused on zebra fish when these ingredients have been proven safe for human usage. They answered that they have changed their mission to be for the body and planet and claimed they don’t have a up-to-date database because of the insane amount of (plastic) products there are. Confusing when all these plastic product consumption is the worst thing for the planet and why they would change their mission to try to protect the planet. The better thing would be focus on not consuming so many products. Bias only explains that. Additionally they rate another ingredient called Butyloctyl Salicylate using another incorrect analysis and this ingredient is acceptable and safe as well. So after numerous conversations with Yuka and consulting numerous world renowned chemists, I have decided their decisions and analysis are based off inaccurate information and bias perspectives. #hardtotrustthem

I’m a huge fan of Pipette. Because of the app I was able to make the decision of what sunscreen was healthiest for me and the environment months ago. It’s the best one I’ve tried that rates so high and it goes on without leaving white residue that many of the healthiest brands do. I also have sensitive skin and it works great for me, no irritation, dryness, or break outs. I couldn’t recommend more.

After looking, I’m guessing it’s because StreamSea products are 35-45 SPF and the criteria for this list is 50 SPF.
I still think they deserve a shout out!

I have a bottle of blue lizard, Australian sunscreen for sensitive skin and when I use the app, it tells me it’s a 34 out of 100 equaling poor. Is there something different than the item you have first on your list of recommendations?

The lizard stick rated excellent but the lizard cream rated poor. I learned the hard way. I purchased the cream and used it halfway then I learned the cream was rated poor so then I bought the stick. I hope this helps.

Blue Lizard has a spray. I would do a search to see how clean it is but I know their sunscreens tend to be very enviromentally friendly and reef safe.

Thank you Julie. As a dermatology nurse I feel it is very important we all use sunscreen. I would love it if you would stress to look at your recommendations. A disclaimer stating the importance of sunscreen would be nice. 99% of the damage we do to our skin is from the sun.

It looks like the second option is free from nanoparticles, but I see no discussion of them in the others. Being free from chemicals and reef-safe is great, but achieving a transparent look on the skin often comes via mineral nanoparticles that can cross the blood-brain barrier and lodge in the nervous system. I think a lot of us prioritize a “non-nano” sunblock as much as any other factor.

Hello! This is an important point! I just recently went through an extensive and headache-y search for safe sunscreen myself, and it was also important to me that it not leave that terrible white-cast that mineral sunscreens are well known for.

While nano-zinc is typically what has been most used to reduce the white cast, there are other options these days where you can choose both reef-safe non-nano zinc and still be free of the ugly white-cast.

I just recently purchased a tube of Thinkbaby Clear Zinc Sunscreen SPF 30, and it does, in fact, end up clear! For reference of my skin color, I am a Fitzpatrick Type IV, almost V, so pretty dark-skinned.

I have not actually used it *in* the sun, yet, so cannot confirm it’s breathability or how it feels in beating down heat, but it does look clear and is made from clean ingredients!

Did you have a look at KINSHIP? I love this one. Higher zincoxide than others and does not leave a white color. Makeup goes over it without any issue. Perhaps a bit more pricy, but when I try other’s with the same level of zincoxide,….. doesn’t compare!

Check into Thinkbaby Clear Zinc Sunscreen, SPF 30! I just bought some, and it does in fact go on clear. It’s reef-safe non-nano zinc, too. They’ve just added ingredients that coat the zinc and improve it’s texture and aesthetic, killing the white cast. Kinda hard to explain how it works, but I literally looked into every ingredient to understand how they were achieving the effect, bc there are some companies that actually achieve the effect by using *unlisted* chemical sunscreen filters that have very little difference to the ones most of us have been trying to avoid, and due to loopholes, they’re not required to list those particular chemicals as active ingredients, therefore allowing them to make (false) claims of being a mineral sunscreen. =/.

Anyway, I don’t know about the other products listed here or even other Thinkbaby products, but the one I named doesn’t appear to have any of that junk in there from what I could tell, and they’re EWG verified, to boot.

      Hope this helps!

Native was bought out by Procter and Gamble and now their products are not as good quality. The deodorant has a poor rating now, however, their spray deodorant has a good rating for now. I also use their sunscreen but it hasn’t been on the shelves for me to see the rating for this summer season. Hopefully it is still good. Beekman makes a good sunscreen, although not cheap
