    1. Ileana from Yuka

Hi James! 😊 Yuka evaluates products based on their nutritional quality, additives, and organic certification, but our ratings aren’t tailored to specific medical conditions like diabetes. We’d recommend checking the sugar and carbohydrate content of each peanut butter and consulting your healthcare professional to see which options are suitable for you. 💚

Some of these should lose points due to being in plastic containers, which contribute to our microplastic ingestion. Would be great to know which ones are in glass or plastic jars please.

Hi Amanda! Thanks for your suggestion! Yuka’s food ratings focus on nutritional quality, additives, and organic certification, so packaging isn’t currently taken into account. We don’t yet have a feature to distinguish between glass and plastic packaging, but I’ll be happy to share your idea with our team!

I am interested to know what the weightings were for the scoring. All the products are 100% peanuts so what makes some butters score 90% and others 84% when there are only marginal differences between them in things like calorific value and fibre content etc ?

    Reply
    1. Sam

Ditto, I was coming here to make exactly the same comment. I’ve seen surprisingly different scores for similar products in other areas, and in order to be able to trust your scores, I need to know whether the difference between 84% and 90% is based on objective differences (eg the levels of protein or fibre they declare), or based weaknesses or random elements in the scoring algorithm?

      Reply
    2. Ileana from Yuka

Hi Andy! Thanks for your question! Yuka’s food ratings are based on nutritional quality (60%), additives (30%), and organic certification (10%). Nutritional quality is calculated using the Nutri-Score, which considers calories, saturated fat, sugar, fiber, protein, and other nutrients. Even small nutritional differences between products containing 100% peanuts can affect their scores. Organic certification can also add up to 10 points!. You can click here to learn more about how we rate food products.

Why not also include Aldi 100% peanuts peanut butter – I think made by Grandessa? It too scores 84% on the app and is probably cheaper than some of these.

Because Whole Earth has a small amount of palm oil (4%) there is no separation of the oil from the peanut butter. When roasted oil separates it oxidises “Consuming oxidised or rancid oil damages cell structures, causes systemic inflammation, and increases long-term health risks like heart disease”. So when it says ‘no palm oil’ it should be consumed within a month of it being manufactured to prevent the oxidation side effects

However this article is not helpful. As pointed out by a previous comment the in app score is different to that in the article, the rankings do not make sense with a 100% not at the top and finally the descriptions are flimsy so don’t know why 84 not 100. guessing its oil and additives.
