TOP 10 Peanut Butters 🇬🇧

Peanut butter is a cupboard staple that can be enjoyed in countless ways: spread on toast, stirred into porridge, blended into smoothies, added to pancakes or simply eaten by the spoonful. Naturally rich in protein, it can be both tasty and nutritious 🥜

There’s no way & without possibility that MANILIFE smooth roasted 🥜 peanut butter is not No. 1 on that list.
I normally don’t even like peanut butter, it’s nearly always dry & difficult to eat.

Thanks for this, I often wonder which nut butter is ‘best’. Unfortunately, this doesn’t give me the answer. I would find this guide easier to follow if all descriptions gave the same information. E.g., some say high in protein, others say no oils, sugar or salt, others just no sugar – I don’t believe these are genuine differences.

Given they are all single ingredient peanut butters, what differentiates the scores? That is the info that should be in the descriptions. Is it organic? Is it in glass or plastic, with metal or plastic lid? Is crunchy healthier than smooth?

There appears to be only one organic peanut butter included. What stops the organic one being the highest scorer? And what stopped other organic peanut butters from reaching the Top Ten?

Someone further down the comments made an excellent point about testing for aflatoxin, which I consider would be an essential part of the assessment that is difficult for the individual consumer to do.

I understand this is a free app and you are working with limited resources. I would rather you focus your attention on making fewer articles and reviews that are as informative and useful as possible, and less on attention-grabbing titles that have less helpful content. I do appreciate what you are aiming to do – thank you for your efforts.

Hi, surprising results from your Peanut butter survey. Roasting Peanuts reduces their health benefits so surely should not be graded higher than non-roasted ones.
You have made no mention oh hi-oleic nuts which are believed to be most beneficial.
Also, very surprisingly, you have listed products that are contained in plastic pots.

Great information. I find the Yuka app invaluable. People must wonder what I am doing when they see me balancing an item on the shelf to get a good scan of the bar code! Mind you I was first introduced to Yuka by a customer in a supermarket who was doing exactly the same thing. Personally I would like scores lowered for plastic packaging on food where there is an alternative e.g peanut butter in plastic pots when it could be in glass jars

As peanuts are not truly nuts, but legumes which are not suitable for everyone to eat, can we please see an equivalent top ten for alternatives such as almond butter?

Why is there only big brands here ? There are much better uk produced peanut butter than you choose to feature… Interesting 🧐

Would have preferred to see the smooth and crunchy rated separately as it is not a like for like comparison.

The M&S crunchy is one of the best I’ve tried and I’m confident it would have scored higher than the other own label crunchy butters.

Yes, I too am wondering why MANILife and Pip & Nut didn’t make the top 10 ? Both are widely available in supermarkets – and appear to be very popular (otherwise the likes of Sainsbury’s wouldn’t stock them). They’re not necessarily the cheapest but in terms of healthier eating both brands use hi-oleic peanuts which, apparently, have a better nutritional profile than other peanut varieties. And they contain no additives, apart from salt.

Thanks for your recommendations. I think it would be helpful to factor organic into the scoring, it’s very important to me, especially with something like peanuts. Also whether it’s a glass or a plastic container, in which case whole earth organic would be the best brand.

Actually, Lidl crunchy in a 1kg pot for about £3.50 is reasonable.100% peanuts ( no salt ) Usually buy Pip and Nut which is salted (1%) so added a bit of salt to the Lidl one!

It would be good if you put them in order like 100/100 a the top and the least at the bottom. It would also be good to have consistency with what’s in it. For example M&S at 67/100 you say,’keeps things simple with roasted peanuts and no unnecessary ingredients’. But then Morrison’s which is 90/100 you say a similar thing, ‘Made from 100% roasted peanuts… with no added salt, sugar or oils.’ Which leaves me wondering why the different score? And BTW I love my Yuka App and love what you guys are doing. 🙂

Why do they all have such different ratings when they all have just the one ingredient? Are the marks subjective, maybe on taste or texture? If it’s on healthiness alone surely they should all have the same mark?

I’ve tried most of the brands listed on the Yuka comparison, Manilife roasted is awesome for taste; albeit quite expensive.
Please be mindful, most roasted nut-butters have a nicer smoky taste, but roasting ( heat treatment) may remove or reduce the nuts nutrient impact
I’m sure the Yuka folk will correct me on the roasting implications
