TOP 10 Deodorants

Your deodorant is often one of the first products put to the test during long days and busy routines.

Daily activities can quickly lead to odor and discomfort. A good deodorant does more than mask smells: it helps keep you feeling fresh while being gentle on your skin.

But ingredient quality really matters, especially for products you use every day. Some deodorants contain aluminum salts or concerning ingredients like BHT. And because deodorant is applied directly to a sensitive area like the underarms, it’s worth paying close attention to what’s in it.

To make things easier, we’ve rounded up the top 10 deodorants on Yuka. These solid stick formulas are all free from high-risk ingredients, so you can stay fresh with confidence.

I personally find Hume to be the best deodorant I have ever used!!. I use the desert bloom fragrance and find it to be a very clean and non offensive smell . It does not stain your clothes as do some of the others rated. It lasts all day and never needs to be reapplied. I use the roll on and it lasts for a few months. So even though it seems expensive , it lasts a lot longer than most. I have used several ranked higher that just didn’t work for me. Love my Hume!

Advice please…I used antiperspirant for years due to hyperhydrosis on my underarms and finally made the switch to natural deodorant about 6 months ago. The problem is, the sweating is still excessive and extremely uncomfortable…HELP!!! Don’t want to do prescriptions from the doctor-trying to be as natural as I can.

unfortunately, natural deodorants will not help you if you have hyperhidrosis. a deodorant masks the smell of sweat it doesn’t stop you from sweating.

I would like to see how they are ranked. What gave them the scores they received? Is Old Spice really void of high-risk ingredients?? And what about ESG/sustainability factors? I love Native, but they were bought out by Proctor and Gamble, so I am sure they would now have lower sustainability scores. Tom’s as well.

Thanks for this list, but how well do they work? I guess you don’t usually ask that question, but is it possible for a deodorant to work without aluminum salts or concerning ingredients like BHT? Also, I wish you had considered some products for those of us who are trying to break away from microplastics. Are there no effective deodorants that come without a plastic tube?

I didn’t have time to read all of the comments, so if some else pointed this out, I apologize. Several of these brands are owned by Colgate/Palmolive (e.g. Toms of Maine, Hello); Native and Schmidt’s are owned by Unilever; Old Spice is owned by Procter and Gamble, etc. Why this matters? Basically, the recommendations are just different products from the same brand. Some of these products are white labels. A simple search of forums on the internet will reveal a lot of allergies to the ingredients in these products suggesting that the products are neither hypoallergenic nor, good for sensitive skin. Not to broad brush all large companies, but some of these companies are straight up evil, saying one thing, but doing something else entirely. See Colgate Palmolive class action suit regarding Tom’s of Maine.

    Hi Julie,
I purchased humble from a local health food store, I’ve shelved it for the summer because it does not help with humidity. I’m in Southern California, we normally don’t have humidity like this, but it has been terrible of late, and humble does not work for humidity. I will wait till summer is over to retry it during the winter when humidity is way down or non-existent.

    Love your app, Thanks much.

    Reply
    1. jennie

a antiperspirant contains some kind of chemical that physically stops the sweat from coming out in the first place, however a lot of people tend to think it’s not good for you- to not sweat at all and keeps the toxins that are in your sweat in your body. a regular deodorant just prevents the sweat from smelling however you still sweat. only thing that sucks is if you tend to sweat and stink more the antiperspirant may only work. so recap:
antiperspirant-stops sweat completely, bad for you
regular deodorant- prevents your sweat from smelling bad, better for you

these better for you deodorants may not work if you tend to sweat or stink more :/

Mendy, have you tried persimmon soaps? Persimmon soap neutralizes stubborn body odors—including hormonal smells and “nonenal” (aging odor)—by breaking down odor molecules at the source. It provides gentle, antibacterial cleansing that moisturizes without stripping the skin’s natural oils, and often contains soothing antioxidants. Amazon has it if you can’t find it at your local stores.

I use Dr Squatch and Native and they both work well for me. Keep in mind if switching from one with aluminum to one without, it will take a week or two for your pours to fully clear out the aluminum. So, may still smell for a week or two. But once that’s done they work extremely well and I have no more odor issues. Been using one or the other of these two several years now.

Sad not to see Curie on your list. It is aluminum free. I know one of your criteria is the effects on the environment ( how the ingredients are harvested and how the product is manufactured) which is important to me. But I’ve reached out to that company and feel their explanation satisfied me enough that it is my deodorant of choice.
As for the cost, just like with food costs, so many things that are better for us just cost more. Many of the cheaper products have ingredients that are either not healthy for us or are more harmful to the environment in their production.

Did you detox your pits first? I used coconut oil for a few weeks only. No deodorant (during Covid, wasn’t leaving the house). I suggest doing this on days when you are not leaving the house. Coconut (raw, cold pressed) will pull the other substances that are just laying immediately under your skin out and give you a fresh start.
